Be Centered – Day One

Welcome to Day 1 of Be Centered!

Over the next 6 days we will be working through my step-by-step guide for finding power in the storm. And like every good journey, we must start with the beginning – Filling your needs.

Listening to our bodies is imperative. They care for us. And when we don’t reciprocate that relationship – our body elevates the concern and finds other ways to get that signal to us.

Many of us are familiar with the need to eat. Our body says “Hey! We need sustenance!” and we feed it. But when we cannot do that right away, or we ignore it – the concern is elevated and some of us become hangry. (Anyone else? Just me? lol)

But it can also be signaled in other ways. For example, if I continue to ignore my hunger, or I’m just not tuned into it for whatever reason – my body starts to issue the “faint” response. I get light-headed. Standing up makes the world into a cartoon outro and darkness starts fading in from the edges of my vision. At that point, my body is practically screaming at me to feed myself. How your body elevates the signal and need may be similar or different. For my husband, he gets shaky. So, typically I can measure if he has forgotten to eat recently by having him hold out his hand and seeing if it is shaking.

But why is this important? Well besides developing a relationship of trust with your body – if we aren’t taking care of our needs, to the best of our abilities, it can make everything else that much more difficult. You know this when you’ve tried to concentrate during class or at work, but you really just need that afternoon snack (or afternoon nap).

But even further, taking care of our needs is an act of empowerment. Being able to solve a problem or respond to a situation creates feelings of achievement and like you’ve got this. You can now use those feelings as evidence that you can do the next thing and that you can handle other situations around you. Making sense?

Can you guess what you are going to do today? Fill your needs!

What need to you have right now that needs to be filled?
How can you fill that need to the best of your ability right now, or in the immediate future?

Tomorrow, we’ll get into the next step – Permission to do Nothing. I’ll see you then!
