Tarot can be a complex system of symbols, keywords, and intuition making it an overwhelming art to learn. As a reader myself since about 2004, I can say that it will get less overwhelming and easier as you learn and practice. Don’t worry though, I have your back with ten helpful tips to reading tarot!

10 Tips to Reading Tarot:
- Record your readings. They can be useful reference to come back to, writing can help meanings stick in your memory better, and later you can see how far you’ve progressed!
- Don’t neglect your intuition. Your intuition can be a valuable tool in reading tarot. It isn’t necessary for reading tarot, and it doesn’t necessarily make your readings better, but it does add an additional facet to your tarot reading toolbox.
- Practice! Read for yourself, friends, family, pets, TV/book/movie characters, etc. You may even find it helpful to make up a person and read for them!
- Make mistakes. It is okay if someone tells you that your reading isn’t accurate or you determine it to not be accurate. Evaluate what happened. Did you ignore your intuition if you are using it? Did you read a card incorrectly? Has it not come to pass yet? Or did something else happen?
- Try different types of readings. Romance, Spiritual, Fortune Telling, psychology-influenced, personal growth, etc. You never know what you might like or be good at! And stretching yourself can help to make you a more well-rounded reader.
- Do things by the book. Then forget the book and experiment. Books can help to provide a foundation for learning, but they do not cover absolutely everything there is to know.
- Pay for a tarot reading or two. This may help to expose you to what you like or don’t like about how readings are given. This can help you to formulate how you want to read for others, or just yourself depending on what you would prefer.
- Join a healthy tarot community. Support from others can make a big difference. As always, watch for predators or those who may not be conducive for your growth.
- Take a break! Don’t burn yourself out by forcing yourself to learn or read tarot for extended periods of time. Take some time away from tarot and do something relaxing or fun!
- Set healthy boundaries. Once others find out you are learning or can read tarot, they may ask you for readings. This can be a good thing! Unless it is too much or too often. It is okay to tell them no and to establish a boundary that is healthy for you.
Bonus Tip!
Enjoy learning and reading. Have fun!
You can choose to do all, a few, or none of these things. That is the beauty of tarot. You have the power to decide how you want to learn and how you want to read.
Good luck on your journey!

Great post! Especially on the recording readings–I sometimes have readings that make zero sense to me when I do them, then I look back a month later and I’m like “Oh.”

Thank you!
I definitely do that too. Sometimes it is so funny going back and being like “Well that was totally off!” Lol.
